Helen studied ceramics at Edinburgh College of Art before going on to study at post-graduate level at Glasgow School of Art. After graduating she then went on to work as Art Therapist, and was involved in community art work and projects until 1995 when she returned to working in ceramics on a full-time basis. In 1997 she won the Applied Arts Scotland Award for Innovation and Craftmanship. In 1998 Helen worked on a commission at St. Hilda's Primary School in Sunderland to make a ceramic mural with the school children, in collaboration with Paul Grime. All the work is hand-modelled in earthenware with underglaze decoration and transparent matt and satin glazes and gold leaf. The range includes wall sconces, candlesticks, bowls, boxes and decorative pieces. "The inspiration for my work originally came from Mexican and American folk art and Victorian Staffordshire figures. I aim to create a whimsical or dreamlike feeling in the work through facial expressions, body language and sometimes the use of narrative. There is a gradual development of themes, with one piece often leading to another." |
