Samantha Maund

Samantha Maund was born in Surrey in 1968. She is a practising chartered physiotherapist but returned to university graduating from Camberwell College of Arts in 2000. In 2002 she and Jenifer Wall established 'Brass Monkeys' studios in Brighton, which is now home to twelve independent makers/artists.

Sam's designs are influenced by her knowledge of physiology, of cells and their matrix, their repeated design and what lies within. Each piece is hand raised from sheet metal. The designs are hand painted with a resist and the surrounding metal deeply etched with acid. They are then patinated, creating a unique textural finish.

The bowls are hand raised with a hammer over metal stakes, annealing them (heating to soften) regularly as the metal hardens when struck. Each design is painted on with a resist. The piece is then immersed in nitric acid which eats away at any exposed metal surface, etching it. The dark patination/ colour is created by applying a chemical which ages the metal by speeding up the oxidisation process. This is only a superficial patina which will continue to darken over time.
