Christina Mingard is a painter of landscapes, but started her career as a book illustrator. In 1998 she began painting the landscape around her home in Bardon Mill, Northumberland and continued to do so almost exclusively for a few years. Since she got herself a VW Caravelle, which she makes use of as a mobile studio, she has ventured further a field. It has enabled her to travel around the North of England, from Yorkshire and Cumbria to the Northumberland coast, choosing the landscape she wishes to paint. What Christina gained from a sustained concentration on the familiar view from her home, is an understanding of the changes of the seasons and the effect of light and the elements on the landscape. Taking this into the countryside around, she tries to capture what is happening in front of her. For this reason, she prefers to use acrylic paints. They give her freedom to work and rework on-site, developing the painting even as the light and weather changes. Usually she works to music and this has an enormous influence upon her paintings, particularly the colour palette. Christina has exhibited across the North of England and is involved in Network Artists in Northumberland. |
