Anja Percival

Although now totally committed to a career in art, Anja initially embarked on a career in the sciences, studying Human Anatomy at Edinburgh University, and then going on to work as a Research Assistant in the department of Developmental Biology at Bath University. However, she soon realised that the scientific scene was not right for her and so went back to college in 1998 to begin her art studies.

Her work still shows some of the influences of her earlier training, particularly in her interest in nature and also the use of mixed scales from micro and macro climates, to result in a somewhat ambiguous image, possessing alternative identities. Her working process is still oddly reminiscent of her lab days too, often beginning with writing; ideas, rough methods and hopeful outcomes, all with quite a methodical approach.

The majority of Anja's work combines collagraph and etching techniques to build up multilayered imagery with rich, textural surfaces. Her prints utilise both representational and abstract elements, to produce images that portray her experience of the landscape. She is fascinated by the different atmospheres that light creates in both our rural and urban environments.

Her recent subject matter has been based on three important underlying ingredients; light, space and surface. This has been developed into an exploration of interior spaces and her imagery has moved towards abstraction. Other recent work explores the different atmospheres that light creates in both our natural and man-made environments, such as stations, and other urban structures.
